The Active Communities Plan isn't dead but is now the Biking and Rolling plan and has been delayed "to be responsive to community needs." It will seek to find ways "goals can be reworked to focus on vibrancy, economic vitality and thriving communities." #BikeSF

New blog post: Python Project-Local Virtualenv Management Redux
In which I describe how I currently manage my virtual environments for both unpinned packages and pinned applications. It started as a TIL update to an older TIL, but as it grew more and more, I’ve concluded this is a proper blog post!
Enjoy:

I want to beg a favor of the Fediverse. For an amusing research project, I need to look at 2 articles in the Times of London from 1860. I believe those are there in their digital archive? If not, oh well. If so, neither I nor my local public library has a subscription; does anyone reading this? This might enrich an entertaining blog piece in progress… Thanks in advance. Wiley licenses content for training an #LLM. The company was not named, but I would suspect it's the one which has been signing a lot of licensing deals lately. Access to STM content could be a big differentiator, though I wouldn't expect it to be exclusive. Also, $23M sounds small.

A screenshot reading, "As we discussed on our investor update, our content is foundational for training and fine-tuning these models. I'm pleased to report that after the quarter closed, we executed a $23 million content rights project with a large tech company. The onetime transaction to be recorded in Q4 includes access to previously published academic and professional book content for specific use in training LLM models. I sincerely cannot see the need nor even understand any reason why anyone would ever want this. The existing text format is simple to use and hard to misinterpret.
But if you’re using DROP (and everyone should) then I guess you, like me, now need to go rewrite working simple tools to use intrinsically more complex mechanisms to ingest more garbage data but get no more useful information.
Is there an aftermarket for used curly braces?

How do you keep yourself informed about blocking third-party issues?
Sometimes I need to write some code, that can be removed when some external issue gets fixed. To keep track of such issues I do update my docblocks with a reference to the external issue. Often I also create an issue on my side of the project, which says: “keep track of xyz and remove code when fixed”
